Day 1: Monday 21st February : Depart

Day 2: Tuesday 22nd February : Maranngu
Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, transfer to Marangu (approx 85km from Kilimanjaro airport), briefing.
Day 3 : Wednesday 23rd February : Simba Camp
Transfer to Rongai Gate. Day’s total trekking time: three to four hours.
Commence climb from the village of Nale Moru at around 1950 metres, beginning on a small path that winds its way through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. A gradual ascent through attractive forest will take us to the edge of the moorland zone at around 2600 metres, with extensive views over the Kenyan plains. The night will be spent camping at Simba Camp.
DAY 4 : Thursday 24th February : Kikelewa Camp
Day’s total trekking time: six to seven hours.
We’ll set off at around 8am to head up to the Kikelewa Caves - a steady ascent up to 3450 metres. After taking in the views of Kibo and the Eastern icefields of the crater rim we’ll travel across the moorland towards the jagged Mawenzi peaks. We’ll camp the night near Kikelewa Caves at 3800 metres.
DAY 5 : Friday 25th February : Mawenzi Tarn
Day’s total trekking time: three to four hours.
A shorter day of walking involving some steeper sections will see us climb up grassy slopes to our next campsite, Mawenzi Tarn, at around 4330 metres.
DAY 6 : Saturday 26th Febraury : Mawenzi Tarn
Our 6th day will be spent acclimatising to maximise our summit success chances. We’ll do acclimatisation walks in-between plenty of rest.
DAY 7 : Sunday 27th February : Kibo Camp
Day’s total trekking time: four to five hours.
We’ll cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kib and set up at Kibo Camp - about 4730 metres.
The remainder of our day will be spent resting in final preparation for the summit ascent.
Day 8 : Monday 28th Febraury : Summit and Horombo Camp
Day’s total trekking time: 11 to 15 hours!
We will start the final and by far the steepest, most demanding, part of the climb by torchlight at around 1 a.m. We’ll walk very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point at 5685 metres. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Peaking at 5895 metres, we’ll pass close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. We’ll then begin our descent to Kibo, at 4700 metres, and after some rest we’ll continue the descent to reach our final campsite at Horombo at 3720 metres.
DAY 9 : Tuesday 1st March : Nakara
Day’s total trekking time: five to seven hours.
A steady descent will take us down through the moorland to Mandara Hut at 2700 metres. The descent continues through lovely lush forest to the National Park gate at Marangu at 1700 metres, where we will be met by the vehicle and transferred back to the hotel.
DAY 10 : Wednesday 2nd March : Arusha
No more walking!
We’ll be transferred from hotel Nakara to the the Arusha Hotel and spend the rest of the day recovering from the climb.
DAY 11 : Thursday 3rd March :
School of St Jude Project Visit
Visit to School of St Jude. We’ll meet with Gemma and the other staff of St Judes who will show us around the campus
and introduce us to some of the students.
DAY 12 : Friday 4th March : School of St Jude
Our day will be spent helping out at St Judes, with activities like covering textbooks in the library and painting school benches. We will also join the children for their weekly assembly.
DAY 13 : Saturday 5th March : Final Day
